The mise-en-scene:

The majority of this video is set near a basketball court. This is typical of a hip-hop video because basketball is a popular sport in the US and it appeals to the youth. Also, J Cole is playing basketball which tells us about him as a person. It is shot during the day so there is bright lighting and this is because of the summer feel this video has. The female character in the video is reinforcing this by her lack of clothing to show that it's summer/hot. J Cole is wearing a snapback,t-shirt, a watch, shambala and chain (to show his wealth)and trainers. These are the typical items of clothing that a rapper would wear. There are various low angle shots of J Cole to show his high status. The setting then changed and they are at a house party. The lighting is quite dim but there are bright coloured decorations and people are dressed casually. The room is full of people dancing and having a good time and this tells us that he is popular. There are close ups of alcohol and he is dancing with the girl quite seductively which shows us that J Cole is a 'playa' and the alcohol played a big part in making the party enjoyable. When the camera is filming J Cole and his girlfriend, a spotlight in on them both to show they're important. Here he is wearing a denim shirt and a white t-shirt underneath and this shows us that he is following the latest trend in fashion as this is a popular look that many people are going for now. There is also a split narrative happening throughout the song where J Cole is seen alone in the frame standing in front of a spotlight to show he is the star. In these shots there are a lot of close ups and he is using direct mode of address.
